My favourite hymn at primary school – Autumn Days by Estelle White:

Autumn days, when the grass is jewelled
And the silk in a chestnut shell
Jet planes meeting in the air to be refuelled
All these things I love so well

(Chorus)

So I mustn’t forget
No, I mustn’t forget
To say a great big thank you
No, I mustn’t forget.

Clouds that look like familiar faces
And winter’s moon with frosted rings
Smell of bacon as I fasten up my laces
And the milkman sings.

Whipped–up spray that is rainbow–scattered
And a swallow curving in the sky
Shoes go comfy though they’re worn out and they’re battered
And the taste of apple pie.

Scent of gardens when the rain’s been falling
And a minnow darting down a stream
Picked–up engine that’s been stuttering and stalling
And a win for my home team.

Autumn
is my favourite season and I was feeling particuarlly autumnal this
weekend because we went to the farmers’ market in Stratford and stocked
up on all kinds of seasonal local goodies including:

  • bags and bags of apples
  • a saddle of venison*
  • pork and apple sausages
  • an entire carrier bag of veg (cabbage, french beans, celeriac) for a bargain £2
  • gorgeous fresh bread

Then, last night I made Toad in the Hole with onion gravy. …and even though I say so myself, it was spanking.

And
yesterday lunchtime we went to the French market in Leamington and had
tartiflette and cassoulet for lunch folowed by crepes.

The market is from Brittanny so there are loads of Produit de Bretagne–marked goods including excellent cider.

Which reminded us that we really ought to organise a shopping visit to France for before Christmas. Always on the list are:

  • Lentilles preparés
  • Creme de cassis etc. for kirs
  • Raclette
  • Magrets de canard
  • Pont L’Eveque
  • Munster
  • Cassoulet
  • Haricots verts
  • Saucissons de Toulouse
  • Harrissa
  • Merguez
  • Gewurtztraminer
  • Tartes flambées
  • Cremant
  • Cahors

*I’ve made a damson and red wine sauce for the venison,
but I am going to have to clean the oven – by the time I’d finished the
Toad it was smoking like a bastard.

  1. man! that was one of my favourites!
Although I bear a grudge that you are rich enough to shop at the French
market! French farmers just aren’t as cheap as they used to be!

  2. Hi
I went to my little girls harvest festival and they sang that Autumn
days song, who knows how I can find the guitar chords so i can play it,
it will be a nice break from Oasis and floyd, “Oh I musnt forget, to
say a great big thankyou etc etc etc ……l

  3. Actually I do have the music at home. I’ll email it to you.

(I love Harvest Festival too – now that’s the proper use for pumpkin. …and unwanted tins of corned beef come to that.)

    1. any chance of e-mailing the music to me for Autumn days, when the grass is jewelled? I have a funeral service tomorrow and the family wanted it and I am having difficulty finding it.

  4. OMG!
I’m in year 8 now and I remmber singing that! I loved it! I was in the
recorder group and had the music to it but I lost it. Now, I play the
flute and I was searching for it on the internet and Voila! Wow! We
sang it at Elmlea Junior school.

  5. I
used to love that song, I had a mate who thought that I’d made it up!
“A hymn with refuelling Jet Planes… never!” Thanks to your site I’ve
been able to relive a happy childhood memory and most importantly,
    prove my mate wrong :O)

  6. Classic!
I love this ‘hymn’ – the contrast between the beautifully imaginitive
and poetic lines and the gibberish that rhymes with it just makes it
all the greater – where else could the jet planes have come from other
than a word to rhyme with ‘jewelled’?!! I’ve never seen a jet plane
refuelling in 30 years, but I’ve always wanted to!

  7. Sorry, missed out a couple of chords…!

I’ve added in dots to indicate the number of beats to play the chord for…

    Verse
    C.. Em.. F.. G..
    C.. Em.. F.. G..
    C.. Em.. F.. G..
    D7…. G….

    Chorus
    C…… C7.. F…. Dm.. G..
    C.. Em.. F.. G.. C….

  8. does any one have the music on recorder for it i’ve been looking for for ages.please if u have one email it to me bye.

  9. Thank
you so much, I sang this at school when I was wee, I wonder, do they
still sing it do you think? I adore this ‘hymn’ it allows you to be
thankful withiut being preachy and the nonsense is beautiful, although
I confess we always shouted the ‘my home team’ part when we could get
away with it (grins in rememberance). Thank you so much for posting it
    up here. Amy.

  10. i’ve not long been out of primary school, about six years ago now and we used to sing AUTUMN DAYS all the time wether it was autumn or not really. we all loved it and used to shout on the bit where it goes mustnt FORGETTTTTTTTTT!
lol the headmaster always used to roll her eyes at that but we didnt
care. before i came across this i only just about managed to remember
the first verse. when you read it from a older persons point of view
you realise its all a bit nosense like! jet plaines meeting in the air
to be refuelled????, ive got the chords now, if only i could find my
    guitar!!!!!!

  11. Oh
my god thank you thank you thank you thank you! My friend and I have
been looking for the lyrics to that song since we were in our first
year (we’re now in our 4th!)! I can’t thank you enough!

  12. Thanks
for printing autumn days on the site, I’m 23 now and still remember
singing that at school when I was 5 or 6, great song, really beought
    back memmories.

  13. wow!
me and some of my friends went on a catholic retreat a few weeks ago
and we came across the same hymn books as we had at our old primary
school and when we found this song we almost jumped for joy as it was a
classic hymn in our primary school. The lyrics are just so calming and
joyfull just reading them now makes me smile. Danielle (14) xxx

  14. where
can i download this song?. i know it’s a hymn and there isnt an
artistic in particular, but anyone whos covered this song would be
great. I’ve been looking for the name of it for so long. All i
remembered was the line “Jet planes meeting in the air to be refulled”.

Can someone email it too me? thanks in advanced.

  15. It is still sung in Primary schools.

It is possible for jet planes to meet in the air for refuelling.

  16. The missing word in the 2nd verse of Autumn Days is “song” as in ”…and the song the milkman sings.”
I used to sing this in Junior school and it was my favourite hymn. I
have searched high and low over the internet to find it and finally,
    thanks to you, i have.
    Thank you 😀
    Laura

  17. P.S.
Note to Stephen: I missed the “In” being incorrect. I automatically
sing it how I was taught it. Also spotted a typo in the 3rd verse…
“shoes go comfy…” it should be, “Shoes SO comfy” lol ;D

    Love this hymn :D:D:D
    Laura

  18. Wey
Hey – I did a school assembley today (im a children’s worker) and the
kids sang this! I couldn’t believe it as I used to sing it in my infant
    school!!!

I’m so pleased that I’ve finally found a copy of the words – for ages all i could remember was the line about apple pie!!

    Still
hunting for the sheet music though, the school i went to used an
accompanying CD. Any ideas where I can find the sheet music??

  22. I

a reference and is top of google search! Such a great song – loved it
and still do. I just wish I could get it out of my head!!!!

  23. What
a lovely song, Ive known the first verse for years, and have been
singing it recently whilst walking through the woods in Loch Lochy on
holiday. I never could remember the rest of the lyrics thankyou !

  24. I
simply adore this song, I haven’t forgotten it after nearly 5 years.
People still think I’m mad when I start singing it in class, in
secondary school I think it’s officially ‘un-cool’. But who cares?! I
    love it. 😀

  25. I
loved that song at school. I´m now 33 I know a right old fogey, but I
still think of autumn days the only bit I could remember was the bit
about apple pie, thanks a lot for printing the whole text.

  26. I’m teaching English in China and desperately want to teach this song to my class. Does anyone know where I can find an MP3 file, it doesn’t seem to be on the internet anywhere, not even if you’re willing to pay!

  27. I
can solve one mystery for you: my primary school teacher wrote this
song – the largest local employer was Flight Refuelling Ltd, and most
of our fathers (including mine) worked for that company. So at the
time, the idea of jet planes refuelling was not as unusual to us as it
must be to everyone else who sung it! I believe it did happen all year
round, though, with no particular attachment to Autumn.

  28. oh
my giddy aunt, I have been searching for these song lyrics for the past
6 years (I’m now in my first year of college) I absolutely love the
song but could only ever remember the first verse and the chorus and
the last line ‘A Win For My Home Team’.

Thank the lord for the internet is all I can say!!!

  40. I LOVE THIS SONG!!!!!
I’m getting married, Ocotber 2008 and i want to sing this! Is this a song that can be sang at weddings?? Will people know it do you think??

  41. Wow! Sat in a pub with all my friends just talking about old school hymns and we all loved this song, for some of us it was over 10years since we last sung it yet we all remembered 1 line, but a diffrent line each. This cleared up a lot of arguments and brought back a lot of happy memories!

  42. plz some one leave the recorder music up on this website i need some recorder music to play in town because i am raising money for the RSPCA 🙂 plz thanks

  43. Hi there
Did you manage to get the music for Autumn Days? I am trying to find it so that I can have it at my wedding. If you could email it to me I would really appreciate it.
    Thanks
    Lisa

  44. I just wrote about this song, and I couldn’t remember the lyrics so I Googled it and this came up.. I’m 20 now and I used to love singing this one. Did anybody else’s school always have those boys at the back of the assembly who yelled out the “WIN FOR MY HOME TEAM!” line?

  45. Thank you so much for posting these lyrics. I’ve been singing it to my little boy and could not remember anything beyond the 1st verse. As much as I love the song it was getting a bit repetitive when he wouldn’t sleep! Anyone know where I can get the book from to see what other memories I can find in there to pass on to the next generation!!??

  46. I love this song and im 10 an I still sing it. Soon goin in 2 secondry school thanxs so much for leting me see it again cos couldn’t remember the first verse.I know your all older than me but realy i am on 10 !!!!!!!

  47. i think the chords are

    G – D – C – D

Em for last line of the verse i think.

    G D C D
Autumn days, when the grass is jewelled
    G D C D
And the silk in a chestnut shell
    G D C D
Jet planes meeting in the air to be refuelled
    Em
All these things I love so well

  48. We sang it at Emmaus primary in Liverpool…we always shouted APPLE PIE too! To this day it’s still one of my favourite songs

But with us it was “and the song the milkman sings”

    Good memories 🙂

  49. My favourite school song and thank so much to Bob for the guitar chords. Trying to work out how you fit those two lines of chords onto the 4 lines of chorus though.

  50. The sheet music and chords is in the bbc complete come and praise book. Its a book specialy for schools but you can order it.
