Am I Brave Enough?

No. But thanks for the offer (which arrived by email).

It’s all a bit Dove advert.

But at least better than this (which I saw in Heat), models recruited from amongst Katie Price’s fan base.

All that said – you can never knock the Bravissimo undies.  Best bras in the world.

Just as well, as that’s what my hair seems to be doing most of left to its own devices at the moment.

In other news, courtesy of the Metro, (still haven’t kicked the habit):

A CNN article about some Yale University research which found people’s self-esteem goes awry when their hair sticks out, is badly cut or messed up. Tests revealed bad hair days had a more traumatic effect on men than women and that people who pondered their bad hair had very low self-esteem.

So, off to build up my self esteem….  all a load of rollocks anyway.

But, seriously, am thinking of a Caryn Franklin do.

What do you think?  Will it go with my lovely new Zara coat (which has a bustle!).

Big Birdie Skirt from Clothkits

Clothkits is back!  Woohoo!  I am dashing out the door to buy a sewing machine before I forget how dreadful I am at sewing.

I was a Clothkits Kid – and loved it.

Many years later, we were having a summer bevarage en-famille in a beer garden and wondered over to a car boot sale next door….

There we found mine and my sister’s Clothkits wardrobe for sale at a considerably marked-up price!  My mother’s handiwork had stood the test of time.

See more at Seventies fad of kit clothes is born again and Is home made better than off the peg? and while we’re having an ethical bent see Chazza shops entries at CK’s Random Ruminations (Happy 30th CK).

Mmmmmm…. Shoes

ShoesOffice Online has a sale on.  The joy.

Tempered by the fact that shoes that I bought just after Easter are now very reduced.

Oh well, good excuse to buy duplicate pairs.

I have bought another pair of what Patsy calls my vampy shoes.

Betty Grable for my Money

How To Marry A Millionaire [1953]

I was watching How to Marry a Millionaire last night, and clothes-wise out of the three it’s got to be Betty Grable for me.

Almost from start to finish she’s wearing a kind of Dior
tiny-waisted full-skirted New Look – which is kind of odd as fashion
historians tell us:

The first Christian Dior couture show was scheduled
for 12 February 1947. Clothes were still scarce and women wore the
sharp-shouldered suits with knee-length skirts that they had cobbled
together as makeshift wartime versions of Elsa Schiaparelli’s slinky
1930s silhouette. The Paris couture trade, which had dominated
international fashion since the late 18th century, was in a precarious
state. What it needed was excitement and Christian Dior delivered it in
a collection of luxurious clothes with soft shoulders, waspy waists and
full flowing skirts intended for what he called “flower women”. “It’s
quite a revelation dear Christian,” pronounced Carmel Snow, the editor
of Harper’s Bazaar, the US magazine. “Your dresses have such a new
look.”

What makes it odd is that the film came out in 1953…

Seeking Pear–Shaped Woman

Today
I am wearing two suits. I am wearing the size 16 jacket of one and the
size 14 skirt of another. Both are identical except in sizing.

Which makes me distinctly apple-shaped – type II diabetes and heart attacks on a plate anyone?

Who would like the other half?

(£25 or less to a deserving cause!)

  • Brand new
  • Kenar from TKMaxx
  • Cropped jacket with two large buttons, three-quarter length sleeves and button-up collar
  • Tailored pencil skirt
  • A bit Jackie O (in my head anyway)
  • Denimy/course chambray-y fabric
  • Smart enough for interviews/occasions

Interested parties please leave a comment.

Someone to Drive You Home

Long Blondes

…I just want to be a sweetheart.

The aim was to form a fantasy pop group: Nico,
Nancy Sinatra, Diana Dors, Barbara Windsor. Sexy and literate, flippant
and heartbreaking all at once. With this in mind, the Long Blondes went
falling and laughing headlong into the glamorous world of heaving amps
onto trains and applying eyeliner in National Express coach stations.

We went to see the fabulous Long Blondes at the Birmingham Irish Centre in Digbeth last night – and they rocked.

I am in love with Kate – and have instantly made a mental note to add her to my _I Want Your Wardrobe list and to my _I Want Your Voice list.

And if I had an I Want Your Attitude list…. well then she’d be top.

And the venue was great – 500 capacity and about 90% full but still enough room to move about.

A very long bar and lots of staff which meant drinks were achievable
rather than just aspirational, only £1 for the cloackroom and only a
10-15 minute walk from Birmingham New Street station.

There was a real look in the room as well – an identifiable but as
yet nameless style – a kind of hibred thrifty-cum-nouveau-eighties
beret/trilby eyeliner-y look. Almost a dramatically updated Dexy’s
Midnight Runners meets Brief Encounter.

Five stars for the album and a further five awarded for the gig.

Compare & Contrast

Writing about web page http://www.bbc.co.uk/health/conditions/mental_health/disorders_eating.shtml

Gobbet 1

For
its part, Marks & Spencer emphatically insists that “in our
womenswear most items are from 8 to 22 generally”, and although the
store says that 14 remains its most popular size, there is no doubt
that the demand for bigger sizes is growing.

“Larger sizes
have definitely become more popular in the nine months that I’ve been
working here,” agreed Marks & Spencer sales assistant Sharna
Solomon. “Per Una [one of the store’s in-house ranges] recently
launched size 20 but female customers are often complaining that the
size 20 is not big enough. The size 16s and 18s always go first.”

Gobbet 2

The
head of Marks & Spencer, one of the main backers of London Fashion
Week, has rejected calls for restrictions on the size of catwalk
models, saying it was for designers to decide the type of models they
wanted.

This year’s London Fashion Week has been revived
by its Marks & Spencer sponsorship. The high-street commercial
giant has provided the cash to pay for a series of top name models to
promote and appear at the shows. Chief of these is the lofty and
super-slim Erin O’Connor, best known for her part in the latest
successful M&S advertising campaign.
