Egg & Soldiers

Egg & SoldiersSome
may go down the route of serving soft boiled eggs with seasonal lightly
boiled asparagus – as for myself; you can’t beat Marmite soldiers….

Himself can’t stand Marmite, and won’t even kiss me goodbye in the morning if I’ve had it on toast for breakfast.

Only the other day he joyfully informed me that it was made from
what’s left in the barrels after the beer has been decanted elsewhere.
His point was that it was what’s left over after they’ve taken the good
bit out!

I’m not sure how true that story is and I don’t particularly mind
either way… (a quick google search reveals it to be unlikely however).

I do draw the line at the new squeezy bottle though: less in it,
more expensive, less environmentally-friendly, more difficult to get
the last bit out etc. Humph.

Even more disturbing is the Marmart Gallery (Cat toast image created by Jackie Wyatt and featued on the Marmart Gallery.)

With thanks to Mum & Dad for this lovely boiled egg set.

“The basic raw material used in the manufacture of MARMITE
is spent brewer’s yeast, a substance whose original and only use was to
ferment sugars into alcohol. For many years this by-product of the
brewing process was seen as a nuisance rather than potentially valuable
food source. However in 1680, a Dutch scientist, Leouwenhoek, examined
this yeast under a microscope and saw that it was composed of tiny
spherical and ovoid cells. The French scientist, Louis Pasteur,
realised that these cells were in fact living plants. Further
investigation by a German chemist, Leibig, found that this yeast could
be made into a concentrated food product, which resembled extract of
meat in appearance, smell and colour, however was vegetarian.”

which would of course be Bovril.

  • Love the photo of the egg cup. Not much seen on this side of the pond. My mother used to serve up breakfast with them, though.

My freakish husband like marmite mixed with tomato ketchup spread on toast. Grim.
